ABST Course Summary – Alberta Basic Security Training
This training course is structured into seven modules, designed to be completed over approximately 40 hours. The program includes:
- Instructor-led narration
- Interactive video content and practical exercises
- Learning activities and journals
Once the course is completed, participants must attend an in-person exam session at an approved testing site. A passing mark of 80% is required for certification.

ALBERTA BASIC SECURITY OVERALL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Eligibility
To apply for a security services license in Alberta, you must:
- Meet a minimum English language proficiency (Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5) to communicate effectively in emergencies
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Hold Canadian citizenship or legal work authorization in Canada
- Demonstrate sound judgment, reliability, and integrity
- Have no indictable criminal history (unless officially pardoned)
- Be free of active criminal charges or investigations
Mandatory Training and Certification
Applicants must:
- Undergo certified baton training if applying for baton-carrying authority
- Complete the Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) program
- Pass the provincial certification exam with a minimum score of 80%
Background Screening Process
All applicants are subject to:
- A mandatory police information and criminal background check at the time of application and every two years for renewal
- Verification performed by the police department in their area of residence
Applicants must:
- Bring two valid government-issued IDs (one must include a photo)
- Provide a recent passport-style photo (taken within the last 3 months)
- Request an Employment Police Information Check and have the photo signed by the police service representative
Additional screening may apply for applicants with prior findings in their background check.
Application Requirements
Ensure all of the following are submitted:
- Completed application forms
- Signed affidavit confirming eligibility (false declarations may result in license suspension or revocation)
- Supporting documents, signed photo, and payment
Note: Incomplete submissions will be returned and delay processing.
License Fees
The licensing fee is $100, valid for a two-year term
